Enugu State today recorded low turn out of voters in the April 11 governorship election that took place in the different polling units in the state.
Our correspondent who visited most parts of Enugu state discovered that most of the polling units were deserted by eligible voters.
Our correspondent gathered that the failure of President Goodluck Jonathan during the last presidential election discouraged people from coming out to vote.
Apart from the low turnout of voters, LEADERSHIP observed that some of the Card Readers failed to live up to the expectations of people following non capturing of eligible voters.
The PDP Gubernatorial Candidate, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, told reporters after his accreditation in Amube Village Hall, that he was optimistic that God would give him the grace to take Enugu to the next level.
Also speaking after his accreditation in his ward, the Chairman of Senate Committee on Works, Senator Ayogu Eze, commended INEC,s officials over the exercise.
He also commended President Goodluck Jonathan for accepting the results of the last presidential elections, saying his action had shown that he is a democrat.
Meanwhile, thugs armed with dangerous weapons, suspected to be sympathic to the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) at the early hours of Saturday attacked some supporters of the All Progressive Congress(APC) at Itchi polling unit in Igbo Eze South Local Government Area, the home town of the APC Governorship candidate, Okey Ezea.
LEADERSHIP sunday gathered that the thugs, who were said to have arrived the first time with two buses, later regrouped few minutes after they were chased away by the electorate who came to the Itchi polling unit to cast their votes.
Eye witness account disclosed that the thugs, allegedly supervised by the police, used dangerous weapons to inflict heavy injuries on the APC supporters and chased them away from the poling units.
According to the source, the police, instead of arresting the hoodlums, resorted to arresting people who were chasing away the hoodlums.
Reacting to the incident, the APC Gubernatorial Candidate, Ezea, accused the PDP of importing more than 1000 thugs, saying that he reported to security operatives earlier.
He alleged that the aim of the violence was to ensure that there was no free and fair election in his local government the entire Nsukka.
